School-Business Partnerships that Work

Nationwide, schools and businesses are working together to benefit students, teachers, and entire communities. Successful partnerships can be found across the grades, in schools large and small. But not every school district is fortunate to have such a large company headquartered in its backyard. We are fortunate in Duarte to have two. Both the City of Hope and Delafield Corporation are leaders in their industry and have partnered with Duarte Unified to transform the high school experience to better serve our students and our community.

These types of programs are referred to as pathway programs. They are co-designed by schools and their industry partners to prepare students for college, career, community and life. The programs combine four components; rigorous academics, career and technical education, work-based learning, and student supports. Our most recent partnership is with Delafield Corporation, a full line distributor specializing in the engineering, manufacturing and sales of products that utilize piping, pumps, hoses, manifolds, valves, and tubing to move both fluids and gases. Headquartered in an 80,000-square foot facility in Duarte, the company has manufacturing and sales offices in Texas, San Diego, and Fontana.

Duarte Unified and Delafield have joined forces with the Southern California Gas Company and Mount San Antonio College to create a STEM program of study that involves a multiyear sequence of courses that integrates core academic knowledge with technical and occupational knowledge and work-based learning in the manufacturing sector. Similar to our biotechnology partnership with the City of Hope, students participate in an extensive 8-week summer apprenticeship on the industry site, working with industry professionals.

In both of these programs students experience college and industry while still in high school and have a variety of certifications available to them. Students who complete the programs have college and career options. In this new era of education where choice is the operative word, Duarte Unified School District is setting a new standard by offering a variety of choices in a variety of settings.Yet another reason why it’s a great time to be a kid in Duarte!
