LA County Fair Showcase 2014

  • artwork This year at the LA County Fair a special exhibit entitled America’s Kids’ “Adventures in Literature” featured amazing contest entries from kids all over Southern California including 286 submissions by students from Duarte Unified. Entries ranged from science panels and state history projects to wood constructed furniture as well as graphic arts, watercolors and pastels in the style of the European and American masters. Also on display were gadgets, gizmos, and gears representing the diverse worlds of science fiction and fantasy that included sock caterpillars to Rain Forest inspired literary works. The students’ creative competition pieces remind us that their young imaginations will inspire the authors and inventors of the future. All of the entries submitted by Duarte Unified students were awarded ribbons by the LA County Fair committee. In addition, the Duarte Unified Board of Education honored these students at the October 23, 2014, board meeting that featured a special showcase of the artwork. Certificates of merit issued by the board were also given to each student by their school principals.

Duarte Unified students from every school also participated in the free FairKids Field Trips offered by the LA County Fair. The students toured educational exhibits that tie in to the learning taking place in their own classrooms. Highlights of their visit included the Underwater Adventure exhibit that explored marine life and featured sea lion, stingray and shark shows. Other favorite exhibits were the California’s Heritage Square, The Farm at Fairplex, Flower & Garden Pavilion, Historic Trains, Mojo’s Wild & Crazy Lagoon, Hall of Heroes and Wilderness Ridge. The students, staff and parent volunteers that attended had a fantastic time and are looking forward to next year’s fair experience.
