Overview of the DUSD Re-Visioning Roadmap

  • Due to COVID-19, a Re-Visioning Steering Committee consisting of key leaders from each of our district’s stakeholder groups was established the first week of June to plan the roadmap for the safe return of our students and staff for the 2020-2021 school year. The key factors guiding their work are equity, sustaining and enriching learning, supporting our community, and maintaining the health and safety of students, staff, and families. The Re-Visioning Steering Committee will offer their recommendations to the Board of Education at the Meeting to be held on July 16, 2020. Learn more about the Steering Committee here.

    These recommendations will be informed by the collective input of a Re-Visioning Taskforce consisting of over 100 additional stakeholders comprised of students, parents, teachers, classified staff, management, and community partners who have also been diligently working since the beginning of June in smaller groups assigned to the specific areas of Instruction, Health & Safety, Social-Emotional Support, Communications & Family Engagement, and Operations. These areas of focus are in alignment with the Planning Framework provided by the Los Angeles County Department of Education (May 27, 2020). Learn more about the Taskforce and Workgroups here.

    The Re-Visioning Steering Committee and Taskforce Workgroups have been closely studying several instructional models for school next year that minimize the risks of COVID-19 and provide the highest quality instruction possible which include the models listed below: 

    Traditional Model - This model requires full-time in-person instruction at school with physical distancing and safety measures as required by the Department of Public Health.

    Blended Learning Model - This model blends part-time in-person instruction with part-time distance learning at home. All required safety measures will also be required when at school.

    100% Distance Learning Model - This model is full-time remote learning from home utilizing online instruction.

    In addition to the hard work of the individuals on the Steering Committee and Taskforce, we have also had significant input from our entire learning community through the Parent Preference and Distance Learning Surveys. We received close to 1,400 responses to the Parent Preference Survey with 76% of respondents indicating health and safety as their primary consideration in their child’s education. Over 1,200 comments were received from the Distance Learning Survey and each one was read and carefully considered. This information was crucial to highlighting the successes and addressing the challenges. (Find the full results of the Parent Preference Survey here and the Distance Learning Survey here.)

    As of this writing, we still have not received guidance for reopening schools from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. But, in addition to the survey input, our Steering Committee and Taskforce have also been carefully reviewing the Guidebook for the Safe Reopening of California's Public Schools issued by the California Department of Education (June 8, 2020) as well as the Planning Framework from the Los Angeles County Office of Education (May 27, 2020) referenced above.

    While the health and safety information concerning COVID-19 and related governance orders continue to fluctuate daily, our Steering Committee and Taskforce members will continue to prepare for all contingencies in the event we are directed to limit the number of students on campus or to close schools temporarily.  These preparations include the purchase of up to date laptops, portable wifi devices, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and analysis of our school spaces to determine safety. The planning also includes ensuring meal service aligns with safety guidelines. All of these activities are for continuity of learning and service to the community. After careful consideration of all these factors and more, it is our goal for the recommendation from the Re-Visioning Steering Committee regarding our operations for the 2020-21 school year be provided to the Board of Education at the Meeting to be held on July 16, 2020. The planned date for students to return to instruction remains August 13, 2020.
