Making Global Connections at Maxwell Academy

Since 2014, Maxwell Academy has been authorized as an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School offering the Primary Years Program for Grades K-6. Now that we also serve students in Grades 7-8, we are delighted to announce that Maxwell is a candidate school for the IB Middle Years Program, and we will be pursuing authorization this school year. The expansion to include the Middle Years Program is a welcome opportunity, and it will position our school to offer a specialty, high demand program that is not readily available in this region.

At Maxwell Academy, students of all ages think critically and consider both local and global contexts. Students also receive World Language Instruction in Mandarin and Spanish, and an emphasis is placed on inquiry-based learning and opportunities for student action. Making global connections is a key component of the curriculum, and we augment our students’ learning by having an active international studies program within our district.

Frequently throughout the year, students from around the world will spend time studying at Maxwell. We have had hundreds of visitors in the past three years, and just last month we hosted a delegation from China. We have found that all the students benefit from the cultural exchange and many stay in touch. It afforded a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn about other customs and practice their Mandarin skills.

“The ultimate goal of instruction at Maxwell Academy is to help our learners become inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators who are principled, caring, risk-takers that are balanced and reflective,” shared Principal Lawson.

Maxwell has been honored by the California PBIS Coalition with the Bronze Medal in recognition of the inclusive learning environment we have created. We encourage prospective parents and community members to visit Maxwell Academy to see our International Baccalaureate World School in action. Sign-up for a tour at www.come2duarteusd.com.
