DUSD Celebrates Special Education Day & Hosts Special Olympics
(Duarte, CA) – First celebrated in 2005, National Special Education Day marks the anniversary of our nation’s first federal special education law which was signed by President Gerald Ford on December 2, 1975, known as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
Operating within full compliance as sanctioned by the California Department of Education, the Duarte Unified School District is committed to providing eligible students with exceptional needs a free and appropriate public education consistent with federal and state laws as defined under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA 2004).
Our Special Education Department delivers a full range of services including speech and language support, psychological and counseling services, adapted physical education, occupational therapy, resource specialist support, as well as specialized classes for qualifying students. In addition, in cooperation with the California State Department of Rehabilitation, and the California Department of Education, the School District offers excellent "school to work" programs and preschool for learners with special needs. Our team of Special Education professionals work in collaboration with general education teachers, counselors, support providers including our instructional assistants, administrators and parents. We also work with community organizations to provide unique educational opportunities for our special needs students, and Duarte Unified is thrilled to partner with the Special Olympics to host the second School Day Soccer Tournament for the Southern California San Gabriel Valley Region.
This partnership between the Special Olympics organization and Adapted Physical Education teachers like our very own Mr. Greg Saris, offers sports training and athletic competition programs for students with intellectual disabilities and other special needs. This year’s event will be the culmination of a six week athletics training program that promotes the development of life-long fitness skills that will help student athletes lead a more productive and independent life.
Join us to cheer our students on this Friday, December 7, 2018, at the Duarte Sports Park (1398 Brycedale Avenue, Duarte). Assistant Principal of Duarte High School (DHS), Mr. Russ Ernest, will serve as the Master of Ceremonies for the 11 different districts across the San Gabriel Valley that will be competing in seven different divisions. The Divisions range from Kindergarten to High School. Volunteers for the event will be made up of DHS Staff, DHS ASB, Adult Transition Program students, and various community members. The Opening Ceremony will kick-off at 10:00 a.m. For questions about this event, please contact Christina Aulicino at firstname.lastname@example.org | 562-502-1091 and follow on Facebook: @SOSClasgvregions and Instagram: @sosc_losangeles For more information, about the Duarte Unified Special Education Department, please contact Jesús Ruiz, Director of Special Education, by email to email@example.com or phone (626) 599-5006.
