At Beardslee Academy, our goal is for every child to build a positive self-image, become a responsible member of society and embrace the rich diversity of the global community. In alignment with our educational mission, we provide a Dual Language Spanish-English Immersion program. Launched in 2017, the program has expanded to include students in TK-3. Every year, we add additional grade levels until it is school-wide.
“We are proud to offer families this option and our talented faculty has done a stellar job implementing the program. In our global society, having mastery of a second language is a gift we can and should give our students,” shared Principal Romero.
Our dual language immersion program has been designed to educate English learners and native English speakers together. The outcome is mastery of academic subject matter content in both English and Spanish. Instruction begins in TK/Kinder with 90 percent in Spanish and 10 percent in English. Instruction shifts by 10 percent each year, until becoming a 50/50 model by Grade 4.
Because we are a K-8 model, students will continue to receive dual language instruction in specific subject areas even when they reach middle school. Additional benefits, supported by sound research, include promoting bilingualism and bi-literacy, academic achievement, and multi-cultural competence for all students.
Third Grade teacher, Cindy Torres shared, “I am a true believer of dual language immersion programs. It is amazing seeing students’ translanguage between English and Spanish, and using one language to make a connection in another language. Their ability to be biliterate will open doors when they enter the competitive 21st Century workforce. This will help them have a bright future!”
