As part of its Facilities Master Plan, DUSD allocated Measure E funds to transition three elementary school campuses to K-8 models including Royal Oaks STEAM Academy. Working with architect Jay Tittle of Little Diversified Architectural Consulting, DUSD contracted American Modular Systems (AMS) to create a modern design that provides a 21st century learning experience for incoming middleschoolers at Royal Oaks, Beardslee and Maxwell Academies.
A total of 22 new Gen7 permanent modular classrooms support collaborative learning, allowing existing programs to be expanded and new ones launched at all three schools. Phase 1 of the project—the Royal Oaks STEAM Academy—houses the school’s rising 7thgraders in 14 state-of-the-art classrooms spread over two 126’ x 36’ wings and one 168’ x 36’ wing, each with separate restroom facilities. Phase 2 will add a new 140’ x 36’ classroom wing at Beardslee and Maxwell, both configured with four open-concept classrooms bookended by boys and girls restroom modules.
AMS engineers worked closely with the architect and project team to obtain DSA approval for a flexible, multifunctional design solution that is energy-efficient and adapts easily to diverse and evolving project-based needs. The unique custom design features operable clear glass NanaWalls separating the main classroom spaces, with sliding glass barn doors—Gen7’s first—sectioning off smaller pull-out areas for individual and small group projects in each classroom. The new Gen7 buildings are healthy and eco-friendly, constructed from sustainable materials and equipped with high efficiency HVAC systems that filter pollutants and circulate fresh, clean air throughout the learning space. Large windows and skylights bring in natural light, supplemented by LEDs to minimize the use of electrical power. These new learning environments are equipped with flexible furniture for unmatched comfort and performance. Royal Oaks STEAM Academy, the pilot school for DUSD’s new STEAM program, opened to students in August 2017. The Beardslee and Maxwell buildings will be completed by April 2018.
