Week of April 28, 2019

Greetings DUSD Families, Staff and Community,

We are quickly heading into the final month of this school year, and the excitement of upcoming promotions, graduations, and summer vacations is swirling. I too am looking forward to recognizing the Graduates of the Class of 2019, they will always hold a special place in my heart as the first students I will have the privilege to issue a diploma as the Superintendent of Duarte Unified.

Leading up to this special day are several other important events at which we will recognize our students' achievements. One such celebration took place this Saturday. I had the honor of co-hosting the NAACP Pasadena Branch's ACT-SO Competition Awards Ceremony along-side Mayor of Duarte, Mrs. Paras-Carracci. ACT-SO is the NAACP’s Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics, which is a yearlong achievement program designed to recruit, stimulate, improve and encourage high academic and cultural achievement among high school students.

This competition is free and open to all students in the San Gabriel Valley who participate in 24 categories of competition in the sciences, humanities, business and performing and visual arts. This year students from Duarte High School, M.I.T. High School and CSArts-SGV were among the medalists. The ten Gold Medal honorees will move on to compete at the National level in Detroit, Michigan this July for cash scholarship awards. It was wonderful to have so many of our talented Duarte students recognized among their San Gabriel Valley peers. It is another testament that our district is rising as the destination for arts-based education.

I am also eager to celebrate College Decision Day this Wednesday at Duarte High School. Our Seniors will reveal where they have decided to pursue the next stage in their undergraduate studies and/or training for their future career. They will be off to exciting places and we are very proud of them. In the meantime, I remind everyone that there is still much important work to be done here in DUSD before we rejoice and watch as our graduates sail their caps into the air. Many students in all grades are participating in state testing, AP exams and year-end assessments this month. I have no doubt you all will do your best and achieve positive results. Stay engaged, stay focused and let's all finish strong together. Have a great week!
