The visit highlighted Duarte Unified School District's partnership with the K-12 Foothill Consortium and its shared commitment to preparing students for college and careers through hands-on learning opportunities. Through this initiative, Duarte Unified students gain access to regional career technical education (CTE) and workforce development opportunities.
Rivera, alongside other students from neighboring districts, spent six weeks learning from 25 scientists and mentors, gaining firsthand experience in modern bioscience research. As interns students gained practical knowledge in lab safety, coding, mutation modeling, clinical trials and so much more, preparing them for future careers in science.
Learning and working inside City of Hope gave Rivera a firsthand look at the dedication of the researchers, clinicians and staff who devote countless hours to advancing cancer care. Seeing the word "hope" displayed throughout the campus took on new meaning for him, symbolizing the perseverance that patients carry with them every day.
“Patients have hope and they keep fighting thanks to all of you,” said Rivera addressing the crowd. “All of your sacrifices, like staying up late and not sleeping are worth it.”
Rivera worked closely with Kevin Morris, principal of Duarte High School and director of college and career pathways, and Emerita Bustos, a CTE teacher and internship supervisor at Duarte High School. Both have served as mentors, helping launch him towards his future.
Preparing students for success beyond graduation is at the heart of Duarte Unified's mission. Superintendent Dr. Jessica Medrano is excited to continue building meaningful partnerships that connect classroom learning to college and career opportunities.
