Shoji's connection to the San Gabriel Valley stretches back generations. With grandparents who lived in the area, he and his wife and children have become familiar faces at local events and community gatherings.
“It feels like a homecoming,” said Shoji. “My family and I feel more and more connected to the fabric of the community, so getting the opportunity to now work here is a tremendous honor.”
Before joining Duarte Unified School District, Shoji spent 11 years teaching high school English, where he enjoyed helping students develop essential reading, writing and communication skills.
For the past six years, he served as an instructional coach, partnering with teachers and staff to strengthen classroom instruction and support student learning.
Throughout his career, Shoji gained invaluable experience collaborating with educators, supporting school wide initiatives and helping maintain a safe learning environment. He looks forward to contributing to Royal Oaks in the same way.
“I truly believe that I have a unique lens as to what students need to be successful when they transition into high school and beyond,” said Shoji.
His experience teaching high school curriculum gives him a unique perspective on the academic and social-emotional skills students need before entering ninth grade, allowing him to help build those foundations early in the K-8 setting.
When asked about his key priorities as assistant principal, Shoji highlighted his desire to build trust and positive relationships with the Royal Oaks community.
He is passionate about creating a school environment where students can engage in hands-on, project-based learning, while building healthy relationships with classmates that foster collaboration, confidence and meaningful connections.
With the first day of school on Aug. 13 quickly approaching, Shoji's top advice for families is to start easing back into a school-year sleep schedule. Getting enough quality rest helps students feel refreshed, focused and ready to learn.
